Sutherland trip xii - Matjiesfontein!!!

Posted by dobbino (Cape Town, South Africa) on 4 August 2009 in Transportation.

"Matjiesfontein - where the hell is that, Bert? - I told you we should have turned right and not left at the traffic lights to get to Piccadilly Circus!"

We stopped at the tiny (really tiny) town of Matjiesfontein on our way up to Sutherland, and this old London bus had pride of place in the parking area of the town. A far as I can determine (courtesy Friends on the London Transport Museum) it is Bus No. RTL 841, which was allocated to Clapham bus garage when new in 1950 and remained in use there until 1958. The bus was sold to City Tramways, Cape Town, in 1966, after which ownership passed to a Mr. Rawden in Matjiesfontein in 1981. The bus is still in use, taking visitors on a tour of the town (the tour takes 10 minutes!). The town features a hotel, a few houses, a Museum, and a train station, and an unusual little gas station.

Happy Silly Tuesday everyone! Please visit Jack Larson's page for the other contributions today.
