Sutherland trip ix - Inside SALT

Posted by dobbino (Cape Town, South Africa) on 30 July 2009 in Miscellaneous.

This is not the greatest photo artistically speaking, but hopefully will be of interest to some of you.

It was taken from the second of the observation points at the SALT observatory, again from behind glass (the first allowed one to see into the control room). The main hexagonal subject that you see is the roof section that opens for observation purposes. At the bottom of the photo you see just some of the 91 interchangeable hexagonal mirror segments that make up the primary mirror for the observatory. Each mirror segment is 1 metre wide and weighs approximately 100 kilograms! The total mirror array spans 11 metres!

This mirror gathers 25 times as much light as our previous largest telescope - it's just phenomenal. The design was based on a modified version of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope in Texas.

The height to the top of the dome is approximately 31 metres.

All comments, and especially constructive criticism is truly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time.
