Nice clean shot. Would love to see more details in the girl's hair though, so that it is separated from the black background. But that might require another light :)

A great shot Rob. I might've brightened her face a little, her eyes are a bit dark...Did you use bounce flash for these shots?

@Mandy Provan: Thanks Mandy - yes, bounce flash for all the shots that night. But I see what you mean here, and after making the adjustment in Photoshop, I can see it definitely is improved with a bit more brightness.

Shooting at a party is not all that easy. I agree with the others that this is a bit dark, but it is not bad. I've found that the Lumiquest Softbox works better than bouncing the flash in these situations. I have 2 Softbox III's and the smaller one (Softbox II). They really do a nice job. They fold flat to fit nicely in my gear bag. I primarily use my 28-70mm f2.8 lens for that kind of candid shooting and these softboxes will work well with that large lens. It will not work as well with a smaller lens but Lumiquest makes several different sizes of softboxes. They work great as very portable off camera light modifiers as well.

i agree w/ the light comments regarding the girl -- but this is still a strong composition and double portrait!! and it is very true that party shots are not easy!! lovely work Rob!! keep it up!! i dare say you learned a great deal and got a considerable number of lovely shots from this party!! bravo for you!!! :)

@dj.tigersprout: Thanks DJ - I certainly did learn a lot and ended with many super images (admittedly after having to do some post processing!), but it's great to get the above type of feedback on posted images. I am going to make notes (simple though they might be) on some of the learnings from the project and post them on my basic blog. Will post a link once I've done that for anyone who may be interested.
