Something special

Posted by dobbino (Cape Town, South Africa) on 30 December 2008 in Food & Cuisine.

This was our special, special lunch today (this was my portion). Our fig season is very short, but Jacqui saw these on the shelves yesterday and then promptly treated us!.
This is normally one of our meals that we would serve as a starter (but with only one or two figs, depending on their size). Fresh figs, washed and opened up like a baked potato, then seasoned with a tiny bit of salt and topped with a generous helping of Brie (I normally put the Brie in the freezer for a good while to get it really cold, otherwise it melts too quickly), and then baked at 180 degrees Centigrade and carefully watched to ensure all the cheese does not melt away (the bubbly bit in the bottom of the dish is to die for, though!). Finally dressed with a touch of reduced Balsamic vinegar, and then eaten like there's no tomorrow! Very simple, but very special. Recipe courtesy of James Martin from BBC Food.
We don't have this that often, but when we do, it's very special - it's just delicious!
