Ship's bell
Posted by dobbino (Cape Town, South Africa) on 24 August 2008 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.
Last in the series and the title tells one what this is. Not sure what its function is, but possibly something to be rung when dinner's ready? (Some folk will do anything to get a response!)
Anyway, the "NE" part of the "Sagres" on the bell stands for Navio Escola (School Ship, Portuguese Navy), while the current name for the training sailing ship is N.R.P. Sagres (Navio da República Portuguesa). The ship was formerly Brazilian owned, and by legal document of 30 January 1962, was commissioned into the Portuguese Navy.
A beautiful bell, aged through endless cleaning by the crew.
In the past I have tried to put selections of song lyrics to the photos that I post, and recently decided to stop doing so. There will be exceptions, however (like yesterday's post), and when I saw this bell, and learnt what the ship was all about, these words and the tune kept repeatedly coming back into my mind long after we had visited the ship, so I share them with you now:
"Ring them bells Saint Peter where the four winds blow" - Bob Dylan (Ring them bells)
