Vergelegen Estate 1

Posted by dobbino (Cape Town, South Africa) on 2 June 2008 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

This is the first in a short series of shots taken at the Vergelegen Estate last Tuesday. At the beginning of May, I posted 2 photos from a previous visit, (the mill and the river in GL's lyrics below), and those helped motivate a second trip - both to the estate and to the restaurant.
This is a photo taken of the homestead from the bottom of what is known as the great lawn. There is a plaque on the urn in the foreground which reads: "This urn marks the western extremity of the east-west axis on which the homestead and gardens are set out. In addition, it marks the centre line of the extensive camphor plantation depicted on the 1707 Van Der Stel plan. All that remains of this plantation is the single row of camphors immediately in front of the homestead.".

"There's a house on a hill, by a worn down weathered old mill, in the valley below where the river winds, there's no such thing as bad times" - Gordon Lightfoot (Cotton Jenny)

All comments, and especially constructive criticism is truly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time.
